Posture

Posture is, quite literally, how you balance your body. We can see when someone is not well-balanced, however, if they weren't balanced at all, they would fall down. Sometimes, they do. It is usually when we are no longer able to adapt to increasingly poor posture that this happens. It is often when we are older and our overall ability to balance while moving gets worse and worse.

Posture is included here in this section on chiropractic because of it's implication in chronic, overuse syndromes and how it affects our nerve system and our overall health. Our posture and the supporting musculature begins to take shape in childhood. It is an excellent time to start watching out for our sitting and standing postures. The good news is that many poor functional postures can improve at any time with some attention to how we are sitting and standing while stretching and strengthening all the right areas. How do you know if your poor posture is functional or structural? Can you get yourself into a better posture? If you can, then you can keep it there. Good posture keeps your spine evenly loaded like your tires wearing slowly and evenly when your car is balanced.

Do you know an eighty-year old who stands tall and erect and do you know another eighty-year old who is slumped over and has to look up to see straight ahead? Which person expresses better overall health and vitality?

This is why we measure and track the posture of our patients in our office. Using chiropractic adjustments and exercise to address posture and movement in the spine and the body as a whole.
