Corrective Exercises

Corrective exercises are the use of bodily movements and/or postures to restore desirable changes in diseased or injured tissues. The corrective exercises are movement strategies that minimize or eliminate compensation. Corrective exercises should precede more integrated exercises, because they can cue the patient’s motor system to respond in a more desirable way and assist in removing or improving biomechanical constraints.

Spinal Screenings Villanova, PA

Spinal Screenings

Sometimes all that stands between your daily pain and a happier, healthier you, is a chiropractic adjustment. Your body naturally wants to be in alignment, and our daily activities can throw what is naturally aligned out of balance. Also known as chiropractic manipulation, manual manipulation, or spinal manipulation, chiropractic adjustment refers to the manipulation of the vertebrae that have abnormal movements and are not functioning properly. Here at Melsha Chiropractic, we can help you achieve balance and proper alignment, giving you relief and improving your health.

Our goal in treating your joint and spinal issues is to reduce subluxation, increase range of motion, reduce nerve irritability, and improve mobility. Our highly skilled chiropractor will work with you to relieve your pain and get you back to living a pain free and healthy lifestyle.

Nerve Function Index

The computerized exam we use for our new patients is available as a non-patient as well. It is particularly helpful when you see another chiropractor who does not have this technology or as a screening tool for evaluating the toll of lifestyle stress.

The test consists of five components that objectively evaluates patterns of spinal and nerve function. It is painless, non-invasive and scientifically sound. It measures the degree of muscle activity, range of motion, pain and tenderness, autonomic dysfunction and the degree of balance between your fight/flight and your relaxation responses.

The test takes about 30 minutes and Dr. Melsha will interpret the results for you following the test.

Computerized Posture Analysis

Our computerized posture analysis uses images of the patient from the front, side and back. Postural imbalances are recorded and an exercise protocol is prescribed to reduce and eliminate distortion. Balance exercises are prescribed as well as life-style modifications.

Computerized Foot Analysis

A computerized foot analysis will determine if or how much the integrity of your feet are having on your body”s ablilty to balance itself and keep your posture on the straight and level. This same test is used to fit a patient for Footleveler”s Spinal Pelvic Stabilizers which are shoe inserts to stabilize the pelvis.

Low Back Pain

General instructions:
Regardless of your particular problem, set aside some time each day or night for complete mental and physical relaxation. This is very important for the restoration and maintenance of health. Exercise regularly and eat as many fruits and vegetables as you can.

Sudden onset of low back pain:

  • Use ice for severe pain.
  • Use a moist heat pad/hot towels for moderate to mild pain.
  • Lay on the floor with knees bent and gently press your low back into the floor and release. Repeat 10x or more as needed.
  • Try laying over a Swiss ball for a mild traction effect.
  • Don’t sit in soft chairs or sofas
  • Don’t sit in hard dining room chairs. A firm padded or upholstered chair is best when you are having low back spasm.
  • Sit back against your desk/computer chair to support your low back.
  • Try a padded lumbar support or use a folded towel in your low back to support and keep the normal arch in your lumbar spine
  • Don’t Overload Your Backpack Or Purse- Remember to carry it over both shoulders to balance the load (if possible).
  • Stretch your legs and back after each hour of sitting- Whether in a car or at a desk, stretching regularly will help to keep you from tightening up or injuring yourself further.
  • Sleep on your back with your knees elevated with pillows or on your side. Sleeping on your stomach is never good for your low back or neck.

Neck Pain

To Maintain Good Neck Mechanics

  • Do not bend at the waist to blow dry hair
  • Do not sleep on stomach. Sleep on back or side with hips and knees slightly flexed
  • Do not watch TV in bed or laying down on sofa with head propped up
  • Pillow should keep head aligned with torso. Use one pillow.
  • Carry bags with your hands and not with your shoulder
  • Change positions if working at a desk for long periods of time.
  • Computer monitor should be elevated closer to eye level.
  • When you can graduate can use heat, use moist heat and not a dry heating pad.
  • Drive, when you can safely, with your head supported against the headrest of the car.
  • Never cradle the phone between your neck and shoulder
Sudden onset of neck pain:

  • I recommend using ice for severe pain episodes.
  • Heat is better for moderate or mild pain episodes.
  • Can’t turn your head? Moist heat for 15 min.
  • Discontinue sports and activities with high velocity movements until further notice
  • Do not put your head back into sink at hairdressers.
  • Even with neck pain, avoid high heeled shoes.
  • Avoid overhead activities
  • Avoid rapid neck movement, like I have to tell you that.
  • Lay with your head off the edge of a bed slightly to get some mild extension in the neck while still maintaining support from the mattress. Rest in this position for 10 minutes and slide yourself back on the bed instead of lifting your head out of this extended position.
